The meeting was called to order by President Jim Payne.
Welcome to all. Forty-seven members in attendance.
Reading of Minutes
The minutes were reviewed via projector.
Motion to approve by Sandy Christensen and 2nd by Deb Gibbs.
Treasurer’s Report
Shawna Skaggs submitted the following: Sugar Bowl deposits and payments totaling $ 25,532.82; (Cruise Night, orders deli international, concession stand, exhibition). Donations totaled $ 681.00 including- Runza $300.00; Buckle $50.00; Cruise Night $37.00; Ice Cream Social $294.00. Expenses for the marching competitions fees are $475.00.
Committee Reports
Merchandise: orders are complete with a few orders remaining to be picked up. No new pride buttons orders will be taken.
Old Business
Treasurer-elect needed. Duties reviewed.
Stadium Clean-up/Con cession: Robbie Samuelson stated we need 18-20 people to clean up after the KHS FB games at UNK. Sign-in at the game.
New Business
NSBA 10/24 more bus sponsors are needed.
Seandra Foryth will chair the gift wrapping at the mall in Dec.
Used Bundy Tenor Sax-reviewed current monies in the instrument fund at $536.00. If funds from the Drum Major cape fund and Sunshine Travel accounts, which are no longer active, are transferred to the instrument fund this will leave $37.26 remaining to purchase the sax. Mark Thomas motioned to approve the recommendation. Arlyn Hinrichs 2nd and the motion carried.
November meeting. Due to the Jazz Concert on 11/3 the November meeting will be moved to Tuesday, November 10th.
Sign up for the KHS BB concession stand will begin at the November meeting. Monies from the UNK football concessions will be available for the Dec. trip.
Director’s Comments
Mr. Svoboda stated regarding the Oct 3rd competition the band did not execute. Students were looking around while marching and others do not know the music. He shared that as leaders the directors and student leaders are reviewing ways for improvement but individual accountability also plays a part in the bands success. He shared that a buddy system has been implemented. The students spend 20 minutes, one on one playing for another student to aid with improvements. Illnesses have also affected the student’s progress as 16-25 students have been ill daily. This is a young band, showing good effort and they will improve.
Due to the number of illnesses and with the current weather forecast for the Oct 10th competition Mr. Svoboda asked parents to share any concerns.
The Matt and Shannon Heaton concert will be held at the Merryman Center on Oct 20th at 7:30 pm. This is an easy way for the students to earn money for the trip to New Orleans by selling tickets to the event.
Cat Cards will wrap up next week. Make checks to ‘Kearney High Band Parents’. Some of the activities planned for the New Orleans trip were reviewed such as: Jackson Square performance, Cajun food, French Quarter, Garden District and Music Tours, viewing the architecture etc.
Mr. Mitchell noted that the younger students have been struggling with the music and asked parents to encourage their child to practice.
Uniforms should be hemmed and pressed for competitions.
Each family with a student traveling to New Orleans should currently have $550.00 in the student’s account with the next amount due Nov 1st.
The officers challenged the parents to a $1.00 donation to add $37.26 to the instrument fund to buy the tenor sax.
