The meeting was called to order by Vice President, Ed Uden at 7:35 PM.
Ed welcomed the 38 parents in attendance. President Judy Meyer and Director Rick Mitchell were attending the Sunrise Middle School band concert.
The minutes of the April band parent meeting were reviewed with no corrections or additions. Mark Thomas moved to accept, Rob Carter 2nd, motion carried.
Treasurer Marlene Lentfer presented the treasurer’s report. She mentioned an additional $229.45 was paid the Kearney Foundation toward the Turf Fund, bring the total paid of our $20,000 pledge to $13,331.32. There were no corrections or questions. Susan Baker moved to accept, Mark Thomas 2nd, motion carried.
Old Business
Ed reminded everyone this is “Aluminum Turf” Week. Please take your aluminum cans into Junkman’s Recycling. Discussion followed with the possible pending receipts of the two grants which were applied for, should we continue to allocate this money to the turf fund? Betty Hatfield moved, Jeanne Thorn 2nd to hold any future aluminum money in the general fund until we get word on both of the grants. It would then be voted on at a later meeting what to allocate the aluminum money to. There was no further discussion, motion carried.
Marlene Lentfer mentioned she will send out an email to notify everyone if we are awarded the Hamburger Helper grant. We should hear May 15th and would be the first Nebraska recipient. There were over 6,600 grants written. The second grant ($5,000 value) applied for will be decided on sometime in September with funds being disbursed between Oct 1st and Sep of 2008.
Nominations for Vice President/President Elect were opened. No nominations were received. The job description of Vice President was reviewed. This is a 3 year commitment. The first year this person will work with the president, lead up band camp, and fill in as needed. The following year this person moves into the President position and the following year moved to the Past President position, which supports and helps guide the current President and answers questions as needed.
Marlene Lentfer spoke regarding her experience of volunteering for the treasury position 4 years ago. She mentioned it has been a very positive and rewarding experience meeting students and parents and being an officer and part of the executive board. The entire band parent organization is very supportive of these officer positions and she asked all members to consider stepping up to volunteer. Shawna Skaggs was appointed by the executive board to the open treasurer position per our by-laws for the next two years. She will replace Susan Baker who is resigning from the treasurer-elect office.

New Business
Ed Uden sent around signup sheets for parents interested in helping at Cruise Night concessions and band camp. He also asked for a person to chair Christmas Gift Wrapping as well as parent shirt/pride button orders in the fall. Susan Baker has volunteered to chair the ice cream social before/after the band camp exhibition. Incoming freshmen parents will be asked to help with the ice cream. The executive board decided not to have desserts for sale at the intermission of Musicalia.
Marlene Lentfer showed the group 3 aprons which she purchased and is donating to the band parents. Sheryl Hansen added embroidery to the aprons which she also donated. The aprons can be worn anytime a member is working with food at any of our fund raisers. Thanks to Marlene and Sheryl for their donations.
The band trip student T-shirts and sponsor polo shirts were also shown. Marlene will take orders for these shirts through Thursday and will be ordering them from the Buckle on Friday, May 9th. These are optional purchase shirts, the T-shirts are $6 and Polo shirts are $12 each.
All students have been told in class to turn in their band uniforms to Mr. Svoboda or Mr. Mitchell. Please make sure all pieces are accounted for with matching numbers. Your student will not be checked out at the end of the year if this is not turned in. Tammie Duncan, uniform chairman, is then getting them ready to be cleaned over the summer.
Directors’ Comments
Mr. Svoboda expressed his thanks to all parents and students who helped at district music contest. Both directors felt individuals, the bands as well as small groups did very well. They will be taking a survey of the students on their feelings on band and the future.
Due to a paper shortage and the district is already dipping into next year’s paper supply, there will not be programs at Thursday night’s band concert. The projection screens will be used in its place. The program will be added to the band web site next week for anyone who wishes to print off a copy for sentimental reasons.
The band trip packets are still available in the band room if anyone missed the trip meeting on the 28th of April. This packet has the latest itinerary as well as flight lists. A final trip meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3rd at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. An email will be sent out as a reminder.
Parents Comments or Questions
Due to a fast moving thunderstorm and the threat of hail, the meeting was called complete. Mark Thomas moved, Shawna Skaggs 2nd to adjourn. Ed Uden and the junior parents met briefly to discuss final arrangements for the Band Banquet.
