General Meeting Minutes – April 2009

Welcome to all attending
Minutes from the March 2rd 2009 meeting were reviewed. A motion was made by Arlyn Hinrichs and second by Bruce Brooks to approve the minutes and the motion was carried.

Shawna Skaggs gave the report. Currently, the account shows a balance of $49,224.25. This includes hockey clean up. We are still awaiting funds from the FB/UNK Concessions, stadium clean-up, BB and Butterbraid sales to distribute to the student accounts.Tammie Duncan made a motion to accept the report and was 2nd by Wendy Kreis. Motion carried.

BB Concessions-the amount per hour has not yet been finalized. Current estimates are $17.00-20:00/hr
Per Shawna Skaggs hockey clean up at the arena, over 5 games, netted $17.11/hr for the student accounts.
Butterbraid sales-Pam Thomas reported 95 students participated in sales with 1304 total sold. The cost to the organization was $6.50 per Butterbraid this year. It was discussed at the Exec Board meeting that if the required 10% of total sales, per the bylaws, were collected for the general fund that the students would make $4.95 per Butterbraid. It was suggested that a motion could be made to make an exception to this situation with the approval of the band parents’ assoc so that each student would make $5.00 per B. braid instead of $4.95. A motion was made by Bruce Brooks, 2nd by Mark Thomas and the motion was carried. Extra Butterbraids are available, will be sold at $12.00 each and the profit will go into the instrument fund.

Ed Uden shared that the assoc is looking for nominations to the board for the 2009-10 school year. A President-Elect, Treasurer-Elect and Secretary are needed. Ed explained the various duties.
Band Scholarships will be awarded at the Band Banquet in May. Applications will be taken through April 15th.

President Ed Uden asked assoc members to make suggestions for summer fundraising and then begin to explore those ideas and bring them back to the next meeting in April. Those ideas are as follows:
Chandra a band parent working at Viiero Wireless has approached the band assoc and reports Viero will donate activation fees to band members who refer new customers. The donation would be $25.00 per referral. She is working on a flyer to be approved by the company. The promotion will run for 30 days. Students may not solicit on school property.
Color guard camp-Mr. Mitchell; Cruise night-Ed Uden
Concessions at the fair-Robbie Samuelson; Jumbalaya Cook-off-Wendy Kreis
Deli International at band camp- Mr. Svoboda; Labor services auction-Darin Meseure
Other ideas: Yanney Park Heritage Days, Dunk Tank

District Music Contest will be held April 24th and 25th. Small groups and solos perform on Friday while the large ensembles perform on Sat. Students will wear their uniforms. Mr. Mitchell reported Friday is when most help will be needed as Sat. is covered. April 21st a pre-contest recital will be held.
Mr. Svoboda noted the many individuals or groups that have worked with the students this past semester and how beneficial these experiences have been for the students. The directors are seeing an increase in the number of students taking private lessons or staying connected to music in college. Dr Forbes, Carla Lindsey, UNK Jazz, UNO Jazz Ensembles, UNL Wind Ensemble, and Synergy Grass were mentioned.
Mr. Svoboda showed the group how he is beginning to use ‘learn.kps’ via the web for assignments.
Students may apply for Leadership and Drum Major positions. The band will be 200+ members strong next year so the program is retaining more students. Mr. Svoboda shared an example of a current student complimenting and encouraging a potential student who felt she was ‘not good enough’ to play in high school. Due to this young man’s encouragement the younger student will be a KHS band member next year.
The 1st down payment for the New Orleans trip is due May 1st. The buses are being reserved and it will cost approx. $791.00 for quad occupancy.
A band concert will be held in October 2009.
Senior uniforms will need to be returned prior to graduation.

A parent questioned if it was possible to add tickets to events the group will be attending in New Orleans including game tickets to the Sugar Bowl.
A parent wondered when band camp will be held. July 27th-31st are the dates for Leadership Camp and August 3-7th is when band camp will take place.

With no further comments, Wendy Kreis motioned to adjourn and Rob Carter 2nd. The motion was carried.
