- The meeting was called to order by President Jim Payne.
- Welcome to all.
Reading of Minutes
- The minutes were approved as written after a clarification regarding the Sunshine Travel Fund was shared. A motion was made by Pam Thomas and was seconded by Wendy Kreis.
Treasurer’s Report
- A verbal report was given by Shawna Skaggs- Treasurer. $950.00 was deposited from the UNK concessions. The checking account currently shows $44,018.11 while the saving account has $24,190.67. This includes monies from the cat cards and the concert. Expenses for marching band competitions for fuel and truck rental totaled $1419.35.
- Sandy Christensen has volunteered for the Treasurer-Elect position.
- With no further questions the Treasurer’s Report was filed.
Committee Reports
- Concession stand – Robbie Samuelson requested the purchase of a burner to warm up hotdogs quickly for the concession stand. The cost is thought to be approximately $25.00. A motion was made by Ann Snider and 2nd by Arlyn Hinrichs to approve the purchase and the motion was carried.
- Gift wrapping at the mall-per the directors the students will sign up at school so they have some ownership in fundraising for their activities.

New Business
- Fundraising and volunteering-President Jim Payne shared that the board is considering different ways to even out the fundraising opportunities. Sign-up opportunities for both volunteering and fundraising were listed in the ‘Quarter Note’ newsletter that came out prior to band camp and also is available on the website at kearneybands.org/. Some parents are not able to attend the meetings. Others attending the meetings have reported that the sign-up clipboard starts at one end of the room and by the time it ends up at the other end the opportunities have been taken. A number of families are volunteering for various activities when needed while others focus on the fundraising aspect. He will review those who are helping and/or fundraising to try and make the money making opportunities fair. Jim asked if the e-mails from the band are coming through and if not to get a current e-mail address to him through the KBPA Executive Board contact form. Current addresses will help get information out.
- Big Band Dance-is held the first Friday in February. The funds raised provide enrichment opportunities for the jazz students. This year the students will be attending the UNO Jazz Festival. Funds are raised by ticket sales. Last year concessions raised $184.00 from dessert sales. The monies from desserts have been up to the band parents in how they are used. A request for a chairperson was made and Wendy Kreis volunteered.
- Marching Band Expenses- next season the directors hope to be given approval to use the two midsized diner trucks (uniforms, props, pit and large instruments) for competitions. The band would be responsible for fuel and would see a cost savings of around $1100.00 if allowed to use the trucks.
Director’s Comments
- Mr. Mitchell reviewed the marching band season and shared that both directors were very proud of the students. The rehearsal conditions were tough this year and there was a lot of illness. After NSBA they felt that the students performed the best they have all year, the rating was tough (only 7 out of 30 AA bands received a ‘Superior’ rating), the students never gave up and they met the goals the best they could. They also thanked the parent volunteers for all they did this year. At next year’s band camp they are looking at streamlining the process.
- The band will march at the Veteran’s Day Parade Wednesday, Nov. 11th. This is the most important event they will march at this year. Students will be dismissed at 2:45 pm; lineup at 3:30 with step off at 4:00pm. The district does not provide transportation.
- NMEA All-State. Percussion Ensemble was invited to perform on November 17th at 10:30 in UNL’s Westbrook Music Building. The following students were selected for All-State Concert Band: Dan Gibbs-flute; Jacob Petr-alto sax and Eric Warren- alternate alto sax. All-State Jazz: Kristin Payne-alto sax.
- Critiques for class requirements are to be completed on-line.
New Orleans/ Sugar Bowl December 28th-January 2/3rd
- A meeting in Dec. (date tba) will be held with students attending and their parent/guardians.
- Day 1-Dec 28th: 166 people will leave from KHS by bus at approx 5:00 pm. Trip 20hours.
- Day 2-Dec 29th: arrive in New Orleans at approx 3:00 p.m. W-Hotel. River walk & Food Court. Bring umbrella or poncho-it will rain sometime during the trip!!
- Day 3-Dec 30th: no Continental Breakfast provided so bring breakfast food. French Quarter to sightsee, shop then lunch. Perform in Jackson Square at 11:30 (music from halftime show). Haunted History Tour (2 hr walking). Dinner at Michaul’s.
- Day 4-Dec 31st: breakfast. Halftime rehearsal 9-12. Garden District Tour followed by Music Walking Tour (or vice versa). New Year’s Party at Mardi Gras World (dinner provided).
- Day 5-Jan 1st: breakfast. Rehearsal 9-12. French Quarter/River walk for lunch. Sugar Bowl!!
- Day 6-Jan 2nd: leave early. Arrive at KHS 20 hrs later. Estimate 2 to 3 am Jan 3rd.
- Misc: question regarding bring coolers. Directors will consider.
