The meeting was called to order by President Matt Bamesberger.
Welcome to all. There were 46 members in attendance.
The meeting began with guest George Quinn from NAPA presenting information for a possible band fundraiser. Several area businesses (Kearney Tire & Auto, Kearney Ag & Auto, Garret Tire & Tread, Bear Frame & Alignment, Kearney Towing & Repair) providing car services will offer a winterization kit (fluid levels, windshield wiper blades, belts and hoses, tire tread etc) for cars at $29.95, a $75.00 value. One hundred kits would be offered for $29.95 each with the amount sold going to the band. Mr. Mitchell explained that KPS allows organizations to sell Cat Cards and one brochure related fundraiser per year. As there are only 100 kits being offered this would not allow all the students to participate so it would need to be a parent sponsored fundraiser. Parents were called upon for questions. Mr. Quinn asked that a decision be made soon so if the band is not interested the opportunity would be offered to others. The kits would need to sell over October so the winterization could take place by the end of December. If the fundraiser is successful and all 100 kits were sold the number may increase next year so that each student would have an opportunity to sell. Mr. Quinn then left the meeting.
Discussion and questions followed. A parent asked about fundraising goals. President Matt B. explained that he would promote the instrument fund while in office as currently there is very little remaining. Another asked do we risk competing with the Cat Cards? As this will not be a student fund raiser rather the parents will sell, it was not felt that it will conflict with the Cat Card sales. What does the organization do to make money for the student accounts? Cat Cards (student gets all monies);Cruise Nite Concessions; donation jar at events, seniors with funds left over in their accounts transfer back to a band account and one brochure fundraiser allowed per year.
A motion was made to participate in this fundraiser by Jan Vieyra and 2nd by Joni Brooks and the motion was carried. Seandra Foryth agreed to be the chair to disperse the kits. A motion was made by Ed Uden that the fundraiser be applied toward the instrument fund. Judy Meyer 2nd and the motion passed.
Reading of Minutes
- Minutes from May 2010 were reviewed. A motion was made by Ed Uden to accept 2nd by Ann Snider. Motion was carried.
Treasurer’s Report
- Past Treasurer Shawna Skaggs gave the Treasurer’s Report through July 2, 2010. Beginning balance: $27,487.77 Income: 675.01 ($1.22 interest from checking; $13.79 interest savings; $ 510.00 Sugar Bowl payments; $150.00 Heaton donation) Expenses: $264.70-treasurer stipend/website maintenance; $219.46-band banquet; $172.00- student deductions for lessons/transfer to choir account. Total all funds: $27,506.62 (checking-$13,258.15; savings $14,248.47).
- Mr. Mitchell asked that the organization recognize Shawna Skaggs for all her hard work as Treasurer the past two years. She has done a wonderful job.
Committee Reports
- Cruise Nite- profit of around $11.00/hr this year. This is down a little from previous years but we were in a new location and it was very hot. Many products were donated this year. See ‘Thank You’ at kearneybands.org/.
- Band Camp-Ronda Jaeschke, President-Elect in charge of drinks and snacks for breaks shared it was a good experience. Special thanks to Michelle Friesen, Lynn Cooper and Rona Newby for their help. Cookies and fresh fruit are popular items along with cheese sticks. Cookies however need to be home baked type because the students won’t eat the generic store brands.
- Spirit merchandize- thanks to Lisa Meseure and Michelle Friesen for coordinating the orders. Items can be picked up this evening. One more order for the window decals will be taken tonight.
- Senior T-shirts-Shawna Skaggs announced that her daughter Kyleigh and she were designing a senior t-shirt that would commemorate the shows from the past four years. The Buckle is working with them on this.
- Senior Flags-Joni Brooks reported that 31 flags have been ordered and will be kept through May. The flag stands need to be located.
- UNK Concessions-(is a fundraiser) we need 6 people per game. If someone would like to volunteer to oversee this event please contact Matt Bamesberger. The following dates need more people to sign-up. Oct 2-one; Oct. 23-three; Nov. 6-one; Nov. 18-six.
- Website-Ed Uden gave an overview of the signing up for information or volunteering and fundraising. The ‘Email Signup’ button indicates “let me know”, while signing up for volunteering or fundraising activities (like the signup clipboards at the meetings) will be under the ‘Bandwagon’ button.

New Business
- Cat Cards-are coming out Sept. 23. They are sold for $5.00 each and offer discounts from area businesses throughout the year. The monies these generate are deposited in the student’s fundraiser account. The students sign out however many they would like. Any cards not sold are returned.
- Non-profit status 501c(3)- per Administration we must apply for our own not-for-profit status. This is a one-time fee costing approximately $800.00. A motion was made by Shawna Skaggs that for this year only, 10% of the Cat Card sales (is normally exempt from 10% organizational operating fee so organization must approve) be applied toward the 501c(3) fee. Any amount above the fee collected will go to the instrument fund. Barbara Bamesberger 2nd and the motion was carried.
- Basketball Concessions- a co-chair is needed to work with Becky Michel this year. Please contact the President or Becky if interested.
- Water Coordinator-we need a person to help ice down the water bottles coolers and see that they get on the bus for the competitions. Cheryl Willis and Tiffany Young volunteered.
- Bus sponsors-we need two bus sponsors per bus. Sign up at kearneybands.org/.
Directors Comments
- Jarvis Cart-this cart holds the mallet instruments and one of them is falling apart. The directors asked that the association purchase a new one for $595.00 plus shipping. Monies are being saved on the competition transportation fees due to a new process this year (see below). Ann Snider motioned that the organization purchase the cart, Ed Uden seconded and all were in agreement.
- Transporting equipment to competitions- the school district has purchased trailers that can be used for hauling equipment to the competitions. We will also use the districts suburbans to haul the trailers. The band parents will purchase the gas. This will save around $450.00 per competition as we will no longer rent a u-haul to get the equipment to the competitions.
- Band Camp-190 kids are in band and only a few kids missed out this year related to detasseling. The music of Danny Elfman is the show’s theme this year.
- Band Trip Summer 2012- trips are usually taken every two years alternating a bus trip with a flying one. Details are being worked out and will be shared at the Nov. meeting. 2012 graduating seniors are eligible to attend.
- Competitions- will return to Harvest of Harmony in GI and Lincoln Public School Competition in addition to NSBA. Itineraries will be posted on the website. The Double AA bands will perform in Omaha. Students will be able to take the ACT on Saturday, October 23rd.
- All-State Auditions-are October 9th.
- Attendance-parents need to be aware that if a student has 6 absences they will receive no class credit. If they are tardy 3 times they will have an after school detention with the directors; 6 tardies will result in a detention in the attendance office and 9 tardies will lead to an out-of-school detention.
