Tuesday, September 4, 2012 · Band Room, KPS
Welcome everyone!
Meeting was called to order by President Lynn Cooper.
34 Parents are in attendance.
Apparel and window decals are in, we are waiting on pride buttons. Yard signs can be purchased for $7.00 each.
We have some old business that we need to take care of. The President-elect and Treasurer-elect weren’t voted in last May, so that will need to be one of the things we take care of first. In May after the band parent meeting adjourned, Jolene Berke asked to be considered for the position of President-elect and Brent Meyer asked to be considered for the position of Treasurer-elect.
The May minutes were motioned to be approved by Ann Snider and 2nd by Alexis McNeil. The minutes will be filed.
Jolene Berke was voted to be the President-elect with no opposition. Brent Meyer was voted to be the treasurer-elect with no opposition.
Washington D.C. trip – the trip went very well. The band takes a trip every 2 years. We don’t know where the next trip will be.
Cruise Nite concessions – This year wasn’t as profitable as it has been in the past possibly about ½ of what we have made in previous years. There were vendors all along Central Ave, not just down the 1 street like we were informed was going to take place. We also had a couple of consistent annual donors that didn’t donate this year. We need to look at a different version of this concession stand. Things such as possibly 2 separate sights with limited offerings. We have been asked to have a stand at Mona for the concerts in the evening. Or possibly dropping this venue to spend our time and energy on something else.
Harvest Festival – A celebration of the Fall Harvest with Farmers markets, music and a great atmosphere. Usually the last week of September, this year is Thursday Sept. 27th 2 P.M – 8 P.M. We have been asked to provide a concession stand much like what was at Cruise Nite. We are the only vendor that has been given this opportunity at this time. We are needing a couple of couple who are willing to chair this event. Supplies can be purchased through Cash-wa, you can call in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon. You may also ask local businesses for donations in order to try to keep the costs down. You can borrow the trailer from Coke if the event chairman, Dick Reiter, will allow the trailer for Festival. He may only want tables used. In the past using the trailer hasn’t been a very good experience. It hasn’t been well maintained nor kept clean, so there is time spent trying to get the trailer to code for the food inspector. You have to use Coke products, you can contact Coca-Cola and let them know how much of which products you would like and then you can pick it up. In the past if there have been extra supplies left, we can sell them to the band parents so the chair isn’t stuck with the remaining supplies. The hamburgers are cooked on grills that the chairs will need to round up, either their own or if they know of someone willing to donate theirs for the evening. Some great resources for information are Tammy and Justin Madsen, Matt and Barb Bamesberger, and Darin and Lisa Meseure.
Paula Nesiba and Diane Suntken are interested in being the chairs for this.
Brent Meyer motioned that we provide a concession stand for the Harvest Festival this year, it was seconded by Tammy Madsen. The Bearcat Marching Festival is the weekend before. There is a possibility that we will have supplies left over from that, which can be used. This is downtown Kearney on a Thursday afternoon/evening. The motion was voted and carried with was no opposition.

Band Camp/Exhibition – Everything went well there were great volunteers, we look forward for the continued interest throughout the year.
UNK Band Day and Bearcat Marching Festival – Saturday Sept. 22nd. The band will march in the parade and then we will be hosting the first annual marching festival. There will be many opportunities to help this day making our guest bands feel welcome. We are going to be feeding bands that have prepaid for their lunch. Right now there are 5 bands that have signed up for the festival, there may be more as the event gets closer. The event begins at 1:00 P.M.
Tracy Falconer is the chair for this event – There was a great response from the mass email to include several people willing to chair a specific area. Thank you !! We still need more assistance, please let Tracy know if you are willing to help.

Greeters
Clean-up
Band Flow workers: to keep the bands flowing from one area to another.
There are several reasons we are planning this event:
Raise some money for the Band Parent Organization.
Provide opportunities to for kids to get feedback on their marching show.
Teaching and Sharing with the kids
The day should one of learning and opportunities to get feedback from the judges, all while listening to great marching band music. We aren’t handing out trophies, taking away the pressure making the day about the kids and music. We anticipate the event being much bigger next year, because more schools will have the time to be able to get this on their calendar.
Cat Cards: Start thinking about who you will sell this discount cards to. Students will prepay for them 10 at a time. If they sell them all, they can check out some more. These sell for $5 each and the money all goes to the students accounts.
UNK football concessions: A fundraiser for student accounts 2 time slots per band student per season.
Pit Dad’s: In charge of transportation of the equipment; to and from the field for games and competitions. Please see Ed Uden.
Stadium Cleanup: Student account fundraiser; Arlene Jones and Jeanne Thorne are in charge, you meet in the stands after the Kearney High home football games. You don’t have to sign-up in advance, show up, sign in and start working. 2 slots per band student are allowed to sign in.
If you are interested in being a bus sponsor, please contact the directors. Send them an email please.
Jaycee Lux is looking for help from senior parents to set up the flags before the games, be there about 4:30 – 4:45.
Directors Comment
The D.C. trip was an amazing success, the kids had a great time. We had a clinic with an Air Force Band, a performance in front of the Jefferson Memorial.
Band Show “Storms of Africa” shirts for $8.00 due on Friday please see the directors or drum majors. Section Shirts are done through the section prices are varied by who they use to make the shirts and what they have on them.
The curriculum this year has changed so now there are 3 bands, Concert, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic. The students had a placement test at the beginning of the second semester to place them within a band that allows each student to excel. There is more opportunity for leadership roles and to not have a crowded classroom.
We were just made aware of the amount of money in the instrument fund. There is a desperate need for a marching baritone. After doing some quick research they are anywhere from $1500 to $2300. The instrument we are needing to replace is very old and in the repair shop a lot.
Ann Snider motioned that we buy a marching baritone tonight, the motion was seconded by Jolene Berke. Mr. Mitchell removed himself from the conversation. The motion was voted on with no opposition.
There were many bystanders during the trip that were impressed by your band students.
Change to the May concert it is now May 9th at 6:30 at Yanney Park.
- September 29th Columbus
- October 6th Harvest of Harmony
- October 20th NSBA at Millard South
Booster Club – providing an opportunity to donate – $7000.00 has been donated since it began last year. We have made some purchases with this money; bass drum carriers and covers, mallets, tuba cases, and we have more that we would like to purchase.
We would like to build some screens for the Storms of Africa show, Jack Syzmanski has volunteered to paint murals on them to go with each song of the show, sandstorm, rain dance, and tropical showers. We need some people who are willing to help build these. We would purchase the supplies and we have the blueprints we just need some labor. Please see Mr. LeFeber if you are willing to help out.
NSBA is the same day as the PSAT, we are scheduled late enough and the counselors will work with the band kids by starting a room early as soon as it is full. So have your students get there early.
