Meeting was called to order by President Jolene Berke.
Approximately 28 Parents were in attendance plus the directors.
Copies of the minutes were available via email blast and paper copies at the door. A motion to approve the minutes with changes (under Directors should read November 14 rather than January in reference to the Jazz Workshop) was made by Todd Ochsner, second by Shanda Kinkade. The minutes were approved.
Treasurer’s Report from Brent Meyer: Checking $10,945.11, Scrip Account $319.23, Student Accounts $15,734.90, Savings Account $29,307.38. Reminder that a Chicago trip payment of $250 was due Nov 15. Please see Brent or Jan to make payments. List of students still needing to make the November payment is on the board.
Old Business
Uniform Cleaning – Trying something new this year. Had students turn in their uniforms following the Veterans Day Parade unless they are trying out for honor bands. Collected about 80 uniforms. Those have been sorted through and are now at Liberty Cleaners. Any students not trying out for honor bands who did not turn in their uniforms will go on the “naughty list” which will be turned in to the office. This will make it difficult to check out at semester, buy prom tickets, etc.
Scrip – Total rebates at approximately $700, KBPA share is approximately $320. Over 30 families participating now. Drew names for the SCRIP incentive for November. Mike Lee won the $5 Quizno’s gift card. Remember that we will place an extra order in December and there are some smaller denomination cards available for the holidays.
Possible Fundraiser – Yanda’s is holding the Nebraska Band Showcase (first annual) on February 1 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. Yanda’s are wondering if we would like to hold a concession stand. They will have 20 bands playing in 30 minute increments beginning at about 11 am and lasting until about 8 pm. They would like hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, cookies, popcorn, soda, water, candy – much like Cruise Nite. We can charge what we want, but we must give 15% to the Fairgrounds. Event is free. We need to let them know our decision asap. There is a girls basketball game that night. If we don’t do, Yanda’s will provide concession. If we decide to go with this, we need chairpersons today.
Many unknowns since this is the first year. Remember that Walmart is up the street if we need to buy more. Also the big band dance is after so we could sell leftovers there. Also could sell to band parents at cost. We would be the only vendor there. Cruise Nite used to be more profitable when we were the only vendor. If we don’t get a foot in the door, we may not get another chance. Some are a bit skittish about lunch food following the Bearcat Marching Festival, but Yanda’s definitely wants burgers and hotdogs. Nebraskaland Bank provided the grill, hotdogs, buns and manpower for a KHS Booster Club function. Not entirely sure about what we can use at the Fairgrounds.
Shanda Kinkade volunteered to chair if someone else will help her. Arlene Jones offered to co-chair with Shanda. Mostion made by Lisa Mesure to hold the concession stand at the Nebraska Band Showcase on February 1, second by Todd Ochsner. Motion passed. Todd Ochsner offered to take his grill over.
Note on UNO Honor Band: Date is changed and is now the same days as the UNL Winter Winds (Jan 24-26).
Runza Night – Last year it was held on February 11. We are working with them to find a date for this year. Next meeting we will need to have people sign up. We are going to try to get both locations again this year. It’s free money for our general account.
Directors
January 20 we will be hosting the 2nd annual Underclassman Honor Band. It was created because there is a bit of a gap in the honor band system for those in 9th grade. Since we couldn’t find one for freshman so we created our own. The UNO Director of Bands will be the clinician. We have someone who will head up the lunch, but we will need helpers. If interested, see the directors.
Honor Bands – Incredible year!! Had 11 students make All-State (double our previous largest number). During All State there was a forum for Tri-M members. Are still five more honor bands coming up. We have had a record number of kids audition (about 100 so far). Kids are getting excited and wanting to excel!!
Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) is a music honor society. We have started a Tri-M chapter here. Focuses are 1) musicianship 2) service 3) advocacy and 4) leadership development. Held first meeting today, elected officers. We would like to get chamber groups together to just make music, serve the community through our music. This year, the qualification is that you had to have lettered in music. Will hold another installation later this year.
Hosted the first annual Jazz Workshop on November 14. The UNO Jazz Band came out and brought their artist in residence. Was a great experience. One UNO student told Mr. Mitchell, “You know, you guys have such great kids here, this has really confirmed to me that I need to be a music teacher when I am done here.” UNO would like to come back again next year and do this again!
Meeting tomorrow with ACE Irrigation about the carts for marching band season.
On many committees regarding the new high school. Are working with architects who built the Lied Center in Lincoln & Kansas. Working to secure funds for the new auditorium. Looking at schedule changes, on campus lunches, etc. Want to be sure that schedules are set up so that the arts and music are available to the kids for scheduling.
Will be a season opener basketball game on Friday (December 6). There was some confusion on the schedule so it was not on the band schedule. They are not required to be there due to this late info, but would like as many kids there as possible. Please arrive 45 minutes prior to game time. Alumni band will be
Music has been handed out for placement recordings. Will be using their Chromebooks to record. Recordings will be due on January 10.
Band Boosters are raising money for new instruments. A mailer was sent to KHS Alumni and a phone-a-thon was held to follow up the mailer. This brought in about $4000. Hoping to fundraise about $60,000 for brass sousaphones. Also working to catalogue old photos and videos to post online.
There will be a Give Where You Live fundraiser on December 5 in connection with the Kearney Area Community Foundation. Information can be found in the post on kearneybands.org/.
Next Band Concert is Tuesday, December 10 at the KHS auditorium at 7:30 pm.
Our Sax Quartet has been invited to perform during the UNL Saxophone Student Recital. This is a first for this type of opportunity and is a very great honor. They will also have a lesson with the saxophone professor.
New Business
Big Band Dance, a couple of changes this year. January 19 there will be a dance at the Peterson Senior Center. They will handle all the advertising, maybe food, etc. Great opportunity. The “regular” dance is April 4. Have been holding this at Sunrise Middle School, but are outgrowing the venue. Robbie Samuelson has offered to continue helping with this and advise this year’s chairs.
