Welcome everyone!
Meeting was called to order by President Lynn Cooper.
16 Parents are in attendance.
The minutes were read by all. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Marlene Hansen and a 2nd by Todd Oschner.
Treasurer’s Report: Tammy Madsen gave the report. The final bills for basketball concessions have been received, so now they can be paid and the hourly wage figured to be placed in the appropiate accounts. The Scrip bank account has been opened so we can begin the process for starting this fundraiser.The report will be filed.
Concessions: We (Kearney High), did not get any district basketball games. Last year the district tournaments were a large portion of our total profits. Runza is now wanting to know the total for the evening, they aren’t wanting to have orders placed later in the the evening.
Runza Night: We don’t have a total at this time. They are still working on it.
Scrip Cards: We have a small hangup with our non-profit status. Something in the wording. We finally were issued an agent to look at our application. Scrip only works with non-profit organizations, so we don’t want to be turned down to do this fundraiser because we don’t have our status yet.
Deli International will begin and run through the Tuesday after spring break. Delivery will be in another 3 or 4 weeks after that.
Band trip deposit: This will be about $100 per person wanting to make the trip, due in May. Your student will be bringing home information in the future about the trip as it becomes available. If your student has funds in their account, they are able to use it for their deposit, for future payments toward the trip or for spending money while on the trip. $50 per day is available to use for spending money from your student’s account if is available. If you need to know the balance of your students account, you can email Brent at the email address on the website.
Band Ambassador Scholarship: The band parent association has 2 scholarships that they award each year, this year the scholarship was increased to $250 each. So keep in mind when your student is a senior, this is available for them to fill out.
Volunteer Roles
Executive Board Members needed for next year: President Elect, Treasurer Elect, and Secretary. The President Elect will be a 3 year commitment, the Treasurer Elect and Secretary are both 2 year commitments. If you have any questions about these positions, or if you know someone that would be a great fit for these positions, please see Lynn.
Directors Comments
The Jazz bands went to the UNO jazz festival on Saturday. They were supposed to perform on Friday but due to the snowstorm, the faculty decided to wait to see what the weather was going to be like on Saturday. There were only 3 of the 40 scheduled bands that performed on Friday. But due to the large amount that didn’t make it on Saturday also, we were able to have everyone perform on Saturday. They had a great performance with terrific feedback.
Last Thursday’s concert went very well. $160 was donated to the Red Cross that evening.
Each student is going to be given a Smart music password. This will allow them to enroll in the classes and then be able to do the performance testing. The tools on this program are really going to helpful to the student as they are learning their music or fine tuning their skills.
There are still uniforms and parts of uniforms that haven’t been turned in yet. These need to be turned in so the uniform committee can get everything compiled and stored properly.
The Wind Ensemble went to the concert festival in Lincoln. They had a great time, and actually got to warm up in a UNL band room and noticed what a rehearsal hall was supposed to sound like. They had a great clinic after their performance.
The festival arena is one that enable the students to have the feedback from the judges, not just a number.
The NSBA marching contest was voted to be in Omaha and Lincoln next year, we did not get enough vote to be the host. We can attempt to host it again, however this year UNK didn’t have a home game on that weekend.
Band Booster Steering Committee: there are a lot of exciting ideas to keep this moving in the right direction.
Uniform committee, we would ideally like 1 parent from each grade to help make this process run smoothly. Tammy Duncan will be there this next year to guide the committee. We need to have someone in place for this fall. You do not need to have sewing experience, someone that pays attention to the details. This would be during band camp/football season/marching season. Class of 2014, Lauren Harbols; Class of 2016, Doreen Sheen and Sonja Lindsey have said they are interested. We are still looking for a Junior and Freshman representative.
Concessions Stand manager/Stadium Clean-up: This is a 1 year commitment and the opportunity to make money for your students account
Bearcat Marching Festival Chairperson: Tracie Falconer took on this task this year and did a wonderful job. Tracie has agreed to organize this again next year.
Band Banquet: A junior parent that would be interested in organizing this event.
UNK Concessions: This is for UNK football games and some of the games generally fall on the marching competitions dates. We may need to sign up for fewer games in the upcoming years, so Tim Higgins will be able to sign up other groups as needed.
Chair for Band Banquet: This is generally a Junior parent, Julie Hofer was last years chair, she is available if you have question/concerns. This doesn’t have to all be done by 1 parent, but can be divided amongst several parents. Mailing the invitations should be covered under a 501c(3) organization tax free. If we don’t have the confirmation yet, we can use the band boosters tax free status and pay them back.
Uniform turn in: Uniforms should be turned in now whether they are clean or dirty. If they haven’t been turned in yet, you will need to get them turned in to avoid a fee from the school. There are a couple of honor bands that students will be wearing their uniform at the concert. If your student is in one of these honor bands, you can have the uniform cleaned, wear them to the concert and then turn the uniform in.
Directors Comments
District Music contests will be in Central City, we are only allowed 21 entries and we have 34 that want to go. There will be a audition process. No large groups will be going. Parents can come watch the performances.
